Oakland International Airport (OAK) Taxiway C Emergency Pavement Repair
Port of Oakland
As the Capital Improvements Project’s Pavement Engineering on-call consultant for the Oakland International Airport (OAK), Orion was contracted to design a fast-track pavement repair for an area of settlement on Taxiway C, including an adjacent aircraft General Aviation parking apron. Taxiway C is the major taxiway serving OAK’s General Aviation and Ramp Parking areas, and forms the access to both North Field Runways 10R-28L and 10L-28R.
The design timeline was accelerated due to the urgent nature of the repairs, with field investigations and bid documents completed in six weeks. The design involved the reconstruction of approximately 41,250 square feet (SF) of Taxiway C in Portland Cement Concrete pavement, 2,000 SF of Taxiway B in asphalt pavement and approximately 14,000 SF of asphalt apron rehabilitation. The project site had extremely weak (low CBR) subgrade conditions that required substantial over-excavation and replacement of certain areas together with cement stabilization of the weak soils.
